Polly’s Pitch – A Square Staycation

Hi there fellow Princetonians, Polly here! Remember me!?

First, let me just say: I’ve missed you. I’m so glad to be back doing what I enjoy and sharing my love for my favorite town with all of you!

Now, I know I’m not the only one with derailed travel plans this summer, and that’s why I would be remiss not to share the secrets up my sleeve for keeping the family happy and healthy during this crazy time.  More recently we have adopted a new M.O. going forward….Summer 2020 is all about local day trips. If you’re feeling a little defeated, DON’T. Take some tips from me on how to spend your mini Princeton staycation!

With Princeton in our own backyard our family day trip to the Square last week looked a little something like this: We packed the van, parked with ease, masked up and took a scenic, morning stroll with the hubby and kids! There’s just something about walking the streets of Princeton again that has been feeding my soul in the best way.

Before finishing our rounds we ordered curbside pickup online. I cannot stress enough how convenient this is! By the time our exercise was done, the kids were ready to split their favorite breakfast sandwich from Princeton Soup & Sandwich, and the grown up’s got our Rojo’s caffeine fix.

The gorgeous sunny weather allowed us to settle in on the spacious Green with blankets and toys we picked up from jaZams during our walk. Music on the Green in the early afternoon perfectly complimented our picnic.

By the time lunch rolled around we found a picnic bench in the shade to enjoy snacks and appetizers from Olsson’s Fine Foods. We love the personal cheese and charcuterie boxes that keep us satisfied until dinner!

Ooh and important tip, don’t judge! When I take a trip to the Square sans children….liquid lunch it is! A refreshing afternoon cocktail on the Tap Room’s shaded terrace is always necessary, just saying!

Hubby offered to take the kids to see the Princeton University campus, and you know what that means…mom got to have some retail therapy time! Last week I was on the hunt for some summer staples and found stunning pieces from Nic+Zoe, Lace Silhouettes, Dandelion and Highbar Boutique. As someone who needs to touch, feel and try on clothing before buying, these shops made me feel safe and confident during the entire process.

As it got later in the evening we knew we wanted to stay and dine outside. To confirm hours and seating availability I flipped open the Palmer Square App and used the helpful Chat feature to ask about all our options. We chose Mediterra, who’s al fresco atmosphere was just as enjoyable as the food. Rumor has it a pizza oven will be added soon. I will definitely have to try it out next time!

Our trip to the Square was such a wonderful change of scenery, where we could be together as a family, outside in a safe environment. Our next staycation destination is being planned as we speak, but a trip around the Square is in order anytime!
