As the weather gets warmer and the school year draws to a close, Princeton beckons daytrippers, visiting families of PU Tigers, international travelers, and of course locals who are looking for a little exploration, relaxation, and family fun. Looking for things to do in Princeton in the summer? Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend a summer day in Princeton, NJ:
-
Catch some live music!
Every Saturday in July & August the Summer Music Series brings live music to the green on Palmer Square. Pick up a snack at one of the shops on the square, then grab a spot on the green to enjoy rock, bluegrass, and more.
-
Get to know the town
If you’re visiting Princeton, start by getting the lay of the land with a walking tour! Learn all about Princeton’s rich history, and see the sights while you’re at it. Princeton Tour Company offers afternoon and evening walking tours in the summer.
-
Take in the art
We’re fortunate enough to have a world-class art museum in the heart of our downtown! The Princeton University Art Museum’s collection boasts collections that range from ancient to contemporary, with thought-provoking special exhibits, self-guided tours for adults and kids, and more. (One of our favorite ways to spend an afternoon on a hot summer day!)
-
Ice cream. Need we say more?
Locals and visitors alike flock to the bent spoon or Halo Pub when it’s time for a sweet treat on a hot day. At bent spoon, local ingredients like NJ stonefruit, berries, sweet corn, and even sungold tomatoes star alongside classic flavors on their innovative menu. Just around the corner on Palmer Square, Halo Pub serves up hard ice cream, twists, and more, all made locally at Halo Farm in Trenton.
-
Explore by bike, or canoe
Load the car and park at Turning Basin park to jump on the Canal Path for a bike ride alongside Lake Carnegie and the D&R Canal, or rent a canoe or kayak there to paddle! Look for turtles enjoying themselves in the sun, too!
-
Sip something new!
Check the calendar at Princeton Corkscrew Wine Shop for a free wine tasting, or grab a seat on the outdoor patio at The Yankee Doodle Tap Room to try a specialty cocktail or a pint of craft beer with your lunch or dinner.
-
Stroll the gardens
If you’re a gardener, there are two historical gardens in Princeton that are must-sees–but you don’t need to be an expert to appreciate the beauty of Prospect Gardens, located on the Princeton University campus, or the gardens at Morven Museum & Garden.
There’s always something fun to do in Princeton, no matter where you’re from, or who you’re visiting with! Looking for more inspiration? Browse the Events Calendar for Palmer Square!
